Department of Chemistry FMIPA UNIMA Welcomes Educational Visit from Students of SMA Negeri 1 Motoling

Tondano, November 7, 2025 — The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics, Natural and Earth Sciences (FMIPAK), Universitas Negeri Manado (UNIMA), welcomed an educational visit from students of SMA Negeri 1 Motoling. The activity was part of a program designed to introduce high school students in North Sulawesi to the campus environment and university-level chemistry laboratories.

The delegation, consisting of 120 students and accompanying teachers, was warmly received by Secretary of the Department of Chemistry, Septiani Palilingan, M.Si, along with lecturers and laboratory assistants. In her opening remarks, she emphasized that the Department of Chemistry UNIMA is open to collaboration with schools to provide students with hands-on exposure to applied chemistry.

“Through activities like this, we hope to foster students’ interest in chemistry and demonstrate how chemical concepts are applied in research and everyday life,” she said.

During the visit, students toured several laboratories, including Basic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry Labs. Lecturers and laboratory assistants explained the function of laboratory instruments, safety procedures, and simple experiments that can be conducted at the high school level.

Students also had the opportunity to perform several practical experiments under the direct guidance of lecturers and laboratory staff. Their enthusiasm was evident, as participants actively asked questions and engaged with equipment that they normally only see in textbooks.

A representative teacher from SMA Negeri 1 Motoling expressed gratitude to the Department of Chemistry UNIMA for the warm welcome and the learning opportunities provided.

“Our students are very excited to experience university-level laboratory practices. This motivates them to pursue further studies in the field of science,” the teacher said.

Through this initiative, the Department of Chemistry UNIMA reaffirmed its commitment to actively participating in educational and community outreach activities, while strengthening the relationship between higher education institutions and secondary schools to nurture a generation of young people who love science and possess a strong scientific character.
